What is Surface Pattern Design?

Many people love to create designs and then create their own stationery line, and Surface Pattern Design is not just for paper products. In essence, you take a little drawing or sketch, which doesn't even have to be complicated, and then I teach you how to create what's called a “repeating pattern” as it repeats endlessly from top to bottom, and side to side. You can then turn your repeating pattern into something like beautiful tissue paper. Here’s a photo of one of my sketches that I turned into tissue paper.

However, those thoughts are often accompanied by a sense of panic and even tears when I think about abandoning something that has been such a fundamental part of my identity. For me, success means feeling content with myself and my work, whether it's sitting on the shelves of a local boutique or a major retailer. It's about collaborating with respectful, kind people and earning a comfortable living. Sure, my ego can be as fragile as anyone else's, but I find that having a more defined perspective on success helps to ground me. If I were driven purely by the desire to outdo others or achieve some abstract notion of 'more success,' I'd probably end up frustrated and perpetually chasing something I might never catch.

They bring in a broader palette of colours, geometric designs, abstract art, and even realistic panoramic views. Imagine a wall that transports you to a serene forest, a bustling cityscape, or an abstract dreamscape; that’s the magic of contemporary surface design. Seamless repeat patterns are a subset of surface design especially handy for wall coverings, giftwrap, and fabric.

Once mere barriers defining a room, walls have evolved into storytellers and mood setters, thanks to the infusion of artistic and innovative surface design concepts. Maybe you’ve heard of this term or come across it while scrolling through one of the many creative accounts you follow on Instagram. However, you’re still not 100% sure what surface pattern design consists of.

The Bridger Mid is constructed from a variety of high-quality materials, including a waterproof Nubuck leather, their B-DRY waterproof and breathable membrane, and a molded rubber toe cap and heel. T’s beefy rubber sole has huge tread blocks, reminiscent of knobby off-road tires, giving you plenty of grip on uneven surfaces. Oboz’s proprietary insoles are molded to match each shoe width and length. While designed for everyday hiking, they’re cushy enough for multi-day backpacking treks, too. However, I swapped out the supplied insoles for a set of high-arch Superfeet insoles. The Oboz Bridger Mid hiking boot showcases high-quality materials and construction.

Is it apparel, upholstery, shoes, bags, homeware, wallpaper, mobile cases, belts or gift wrap? If you’re designing wallpaper, is it for a nursery, living room, office space or retail store? Imagine the purpose of the space and what it’ll look like once it’s completed? When you do visual legwork, it becomes easier for you to choose the colors, motifs and patterns, and then scale them accordingly. Set within the landmark Mediateca Santa Teresa library in Milan’s Brera district, Design Space AlUla presented a smattering of projects created with local craft traditions. Among these were the AlUla Design Residency, realized under the curation of architect Ali Ismail Karimi, which tapped five global designers to participate in a five-month immersion into life in AlUla. Most visible was Hall Haus’s giant seating system, which blended Majlis-style sofas with the swoops of sand dunes. Also appearing windswept are Bahraini-Danish’s steel partitions and sculptural chairs by Leo Orta that channel AlUla’s geological formations. Studio Raw Material’s floor lamps explore the spatial quality of light in the Qasr al-Bint while Leen Ajlan’s wooden platforms and benches reflect the setup of Saudi folk games.

"When the layer count was travelling towards 800 I started to regret my decision, but repeating elements would have felt a bit like cheating." The funny thing about this is that scrapbooking (including digital scrapbooking) is actually a type of surface design, it’s just a very small piece of a much larger pie. So when I decided to retire from digital designing to shift into surface design in 2016, I was actually opening myself and my designs up to a much larger market. Surface design is any type of artwork (pattern, illustration, hand lettering, etc.) made by a designer that is intended to be applied to a surface to enhance its visual appearance and/or functionality. It’s a good question because the term “surface design” is fairly new and it’s not nearly as common as other artistic fields like graphic design or photography. And while I don’t personally claim to be an expert in surface design, I thought it could be helpful to share my perspective on what surface design is.

Research and determine what elements you can include in your theme. In order to ensure uniformity in your motifs, choose the ones that are typically paired together,  for example knife and fork, salt and pepper, rainbows and clouds, wine and cheese, lock and key, and so on . As far as recognizable motifs are concerned, you can always practice and learn from what you didn’t get right.

Your motifs will tell the story of your pattern, and convey the message or feeling that you’re evoking. Even the simplest looking patterns have required decisions about the motifs, layout, spacing, scale, colour and style, resulting in a final design that’s both technically accurate and lovely to look at. In this post, we’ll look at the fundamentals of Surface Design, and break down the basic things you need to know when designing a repeating pattern. Applying your designs to a range of surfaces poses its own set of problems, and Ben O'Brien advises considering the range of different media from the outset. The practice of collecting materials - be it photographs, found objects, interesting colour combinations, unusual words - is one that every designer should follow. Our illustrators recommend gathering as much inspiration as you can to use in your creative process.
